What’s wrong with this picture?
I was recently reading someone’s blog and he was asking that someone help him find a few movies that have spiritual meaning in them for him and his group (of christians) to watch and analyze. Well at first I thought, “cool concept” but then I read some of the titles and was kind of taken aback by some of them. I like watching good movies and all but I am not going to justify watching a rated R movie with sex, nudity and cursing by saying that the “theme” or idea of the movie was spiritual. I had to ask myself, “What’s wrong with this picture”?
I know sometimes we feel as though in our faith that we CAN’T watch things or do things that others do but that is what makes us different. I am guilty of watching movies or shows that aren’t glorifying to God; in fact, Sex and the City is my FAVORITE show. I got all 6 seasons for my birthday and have watched every episode more than once. I think we are all guilty of that. But I think that there is something terribly wrong when someone tries to justify watching a show or movie like that by pointing out all the “spiritual” themes. Also, I have a huge problem when a group of christians get together and goes out and gets drunk or doesn’t walk out of a movie that is filled with profanity and other ungodly things. Again, I am not perfect; I can’t stress that enough. But, I have a great group of people around me that keep me accountable. I don’t know one of my friends that would be okay taking me to a bar and letting me get drunk and then the next day excuse it by saying, “she just had a bad day..or.. she wasn’t even that drunk”.
I just think that in the kind of world we live in today, it is so easy to justify doing things that others are doing. We are surrounded with false ideas about what is beautiful and attractive. We need to rise above it all and be different. We need to walk the walk. Does that make any sense at all? I’m certainly open to debate. I just feel very strongly about this issue.  I’d like to hear your thoughts on this issue…
