The Key to a stress free day…

I have discovered a lot about my personality and character from working in a very stressful office. I am surrounded everyday with demanding patients, and impatient people that want what they want- when they want it and don’t stop to think that maybe the problem isn’t everyone around them, but maybe the problem is them. Now this sounds harsh I know but please hear me out. One patient in particular calls our office everyday with unrealistic, imposing demands and everyday I let it get to me. Well one day recently I just gave up. I was so tired of dealing with the same problem everyday, and I had no more energy to argue or fight back with them. Instead I tried a different approach. While this person was getting angry on the phone one particular day, I decided to be kind and extra gentle with them. My tone was calm and helpful; I was not snappy or quick to cut them off and I told them that I would do anything I could to make them happy. This of course did not make the person any nicer but when I hung up the phone, I felt a peace of mind that I had never felt before in this office. I felt as if a weight had been dropped from my shoulders and I wondered why I had never tried this before. All this to say, the next time you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed remember that no one can make you angry or sad; it is how you choose to respond to a situation that makes all the difference in the world.
